Israel's Netanyahu: World has double standards

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's prime minister on Monday accused the international community of "deafening silence" in response to recent vows by the head of the Hamas militant group to fight on until the Jewish state is destroyed, and appeared unmoved by the gathering storm of global condemnation of his government's plans to continue settling the West Bank.

Benjamin Netanyahu's tough words were likely to deepen the rift between Israel and some of its closest allies, particularly in Europe, that has emerged since the U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly voted in favor of Palestinian independence last month. In a sign of the tense relations, European Union foreign ministers were gathered in Brussels to condemn new settlement construction that Netanyahu has authorized in response to the U.N. decision.

Speaking to foreign reporters, Netanyahu accused the international community of having double standards, condemning not-yet-built settlements in the West Bank while standing quiet during a historic visit to the Gaza Strip by Hamas' exiled leader, Khaled Mashaal.

Making his first trip to the Hamas-ruled territory over the weekend, Mashaal delivered a series of speeches to throngs of supporters vowing to wipe Israel off the map. The visit underscored Hamas' rising clout and regional acceptance since its eight-day conflict with Israel last month.

Netanyahu also directed his ire at Hamas' rival, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, for not speaking out.

"This weekend the leader of Hamas, sitting next to the Hamas leader of Gaza, a man who praised Osama Bin Laden, this weekend openly called for the destruction of Israel. Where was the outrage? Where were the U.N. resolutions? Where was President Abbas?" Netanyahu said.

"Why weren't Palestinian diplomats summoned to European and other capitals to explain why the PA president not only refused to condemn this but actually declared his intention to unite with Hamas. There was nothing, there was silence and it was deafening silence," he added.

Netanyahu has long complained that the world unfairly singles out Israel for criticism. In Monday's address, he accused the United Nations of passing an unbalanced resolution that supported Palestinian independence but did not address Israeli security concerns.

The U.N. resolution recognized a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, territories captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. Just eight countries sided with Israel in opposing the vote.

Although it does not end Israel's occupation of the West Bank and east Jerusalem, the resolution gave an international endorsement to the Palestinian position on the borders between Israel and a future Palestine. It also amounted to a broad condemnation of Israeli settlements in the two areas. Israel withdrew its troops and settlers from Gaza in 2005.

Netanyahu, who rejects a return to Israel's 1967 lines, responded to the U.N. resolution with plans to build thousands of new homes in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. The most contentious plan is to develop a corridor linking east Jerusalem and Maaleh Adumim, one of the largest Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

The Palestinians say this project, known as E1, would deal a death blow to any hopes for peace since it would separate the West Bank from east Jerusalem, their hoped-for capital, and drive a deep wedge between the northern and southern parts of the West Bank by creating a string of settlements jutting nearly halfway across the West Bank.

Israeli officials say construction on the E1 project is years away. But the country has come under fierce criticism by its closest allies, the U.S. and major countries in Western Europe.

Last week, a string of Israeli ambassadors were summoned for official reprimand in European capitals, and on Monday, EU foreign ministers gathered in Brussels to discuss a response to the plan.

Sweden's foreign minister, Carl Bildt, said the Israeli construction plans have caused "extreme concern" in the 27-nation EU. "What the Israelis did on E1 has shifted opinions in Europe," Bildt said as he arrived for the meeting. "I don't think the Israelis are aware of this."

The Palestinians say they turned to the U.N. in frustration after a four-year freeze in peace efforts under Netanyahu. The Palestinians say they will not resume talks unless Netanyahu halts settlement construction and accepts the 1967 lines as the basis for talks.

Netanyahu played down the international criticism and blamed the Palestinians for the impasse. He noted that a 10-month partial settlement freeze he imposed in 2010 had failed to restart negotiations.

"The reason why the Palestinians avoided negotiations for the past four years is a very simple one. They avoided negotiations because they were willing to take concessions from Israel but they were not prepared to make concessions to Israel," he said.

Netanyahu said that negotiations should resume without any conditions, and even held out the possibility of abandoning the E1 plan.

"We remain committed and this is what we prefer, a bilateral negotiation without preconditions in which all these questions can be raised, that is our preference and I hope the Palestinian Authority will go that route because it is better for them and it is better for us," he said.

While Netanyahu's term has been characterized by tensions with Israel's allies, he remains popular at home and appears set to win a new term as head of a hard-line coalition in parliamentary elections next month.

Netanyahu told the audience he had made great gains during his term. He claimed he had helped draw attention to Iran's suspect nuclear program, beefed up Israel's cybersecurity and missile defenses, and fortified Israel's southern border with Egypt to prevent militant attacks and waves of African migrants from entering the country.

Yet in a moment of candor, he signaled that his sometimes rocky relations with President Barack Obama could have been handled better. "Who doesn't have regrets?"

What your kind of girl holds to get you excited

Now steady on in the back there, it wasn?t that kind of survey, just a lot of wholesome yet diverse answers to the question from goo Ranking, what sort of item being held by their kind of girl would press the right buttons.

Demographics

From the 5th to the 7th of September 2012 1,006 members of the goo Research monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 53.4% of the sample were female, 10.5% in their teens, 13.7% in their twenties, 26.6% in their thirties, 27.6% in their forties, 11.7% in their fifties, and 9.9% aged sixty or older. Note that the score in the results refers to the relative number of votes for each option, not a percentage of the total sample. This question was for the men only.

I?m not sure about the fruit angle, and a rocket launcher or scissors is getting just a bit too silly! I?m unable to find a suitable glasses image, so instead here is someone wearing glasses but holding a pineapple:

    Psy Does Not Salute You

Oh, brother. It seems that nearly ten years ago that rapper guy Psy ? you know, that one who sings "Gangnam Style" and will never sing anything else ever again ? made some controversial comments about American troops at an Iraq War protest. Specifically, he said: "Kill those fucking Yankees who have been torturing Iraqi captives / Kill those fucking Yankees who ordered them to torture / Kill their daughters, mothers, daughters-in-law and fathers / Kill them all slowly and painfully." Soooo... yeah, that's pretty bad, but again, it was years ago, at one protest, and everyone was really mad back then. It's a bad sentiment, to be sure, but are we really going to rake him over the coals that hard? Well, yes, we are. Enough for him to issue a long, heartfelt apology, anyway. Really the takeaway from all this is that we should not be trusting former BU students. As we must forever remind ourselves: Sucks to BU. Guys, it just really sucks to BU. [Daily Intel]

Oh, no! Nerd-joke/sex-joke auteur (and AMC TV show host) Kevin Smith is quitting movies. Yes, the Clerks director says that his last film will be... another Clerks movie, so I guess there are some who will be sad about that. Mostly modern Rip Van Winkles who just woke up somewhere in suburban New Jersey and still think it's 1994. But modern Rip Van Winkles are people, too, so we shouldn't discount them. Anyway, some sort of Kevin Smith retrospective will have to be done, in which the first Clerks is screened, then Chasing Amy, then I guess Dogma, and then... I dunno. Mallrats was pretty funny back in the day. Wasn't it? It was, with that handshake thing and the other thing. Shannen Doherty, that's the name. But, yes, that's that for Kevin Smith. Who will miss him? [Huffington Post]

Fans of Robert Zemeckis's campy cult favorite Death Becomes Her, the 1993 war of the divas starring Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep (and a lot of gross-out special effects), may either rejoice or despair at this news: Bravo is planning on turning the movie into a series, with Zemeckis signed on as executive producer. So obviously there are some good aspects to this idea, in that the concept is fun (old rivals trying who become essentially immortal while trying to maintain their youthful looks and battling for the same dopey man), and Zemeckis's involvement might mean the project will maintain some integrity. But then there's that Bravo thing. Bravo is branching out into scripted fare, which gives one pause enough on its own, but this particular thing is a sacred property, and to have a new generation only associate the name with some basic-cable show on an untested network (untested in terms of scripted fare, anyway) seems like a grave injustice. So, it's a mixed bag. At least one immediate fun thing comes out of this, that being the game of who should play Helen and Madeleine. It really depends on how old they want to make them, but just guessing that we're talking forties-ish here, and a cable-level pool of available talent, how about Melora Hardin as Madeleine and Judy Greer as Helen? Greer might be too good for this (Hardin might be, too), but they could be so fun together! Remember how good Hardin was as crazy Jan on The Office? And Greer could definitely do the conniving other woman bit. So that's what I got right now. Now you go. [Variety]

There's a rumor afoot that Kristen Wiig might sign on to play a love interest for Brick, the character played by Steve Carell, in Anchorman 2. Which could be fun! Obviously Carell is a much bigger star now than when the first movie came out, so it makes sense that they'd want to expand his story, but let's hope they don't expand it too much. Part of what was funny about Brick's barely even sentient level of mental ability was that he was used only once in a while. A whole movie of that nonsensical stammering and free association might not fly that well. But still, Kristen Wiig is funny and so is Steve Carell, so maybe there's really nothing to worry about here. If the news is even true, that is. [The Wrap]

Looks like 20th Century Fox is looking to develop a sword-and-sandal epic about Arminius, a German wildsman who was trained by the Roman army and then turned against them when Rome tried to conquer Germany. He was pretty young, 25 or so, when all this went down, so this is a good vehicle for some new hunk. Or, like, Chris Hemsworth. Who is a new-ish hunk. A hunk will be involved, is the point. And, everyone likes a hunk, so this will probably be a big hit. (Unless the hunk is named John Carter, that is.) [Deadline]

James McAvoy will soon be appearing in London's West End as the title role in a production of, erm... The Scottish Play. You know the one. That one. The one we're not allowed to say out loud lest this whole production be cursed. Though, hm, we're not actually doing a play here, are we? This is a blog. So, OK. I'm gonna say it: Macbeth. Yikes! Scary. But the world still turns, so: Macbeth again. Macbeth I say! James McAvoy is playing Macbeth. Which could be interesting, though isn't he a little young? Just a little? Eh, doesn't really matter. We'll likely never see it. Do you know how expensive tickets to London are? Enough to make you murder a guy named Duncan. [Deadline]

A first poster for the Tom Cruise alien action picture Oblivion has been released, and from the looks of it New York City is once again getting pretty badly bruised and battered. Or turned into a waterfall? It's unclear. The slogan for the movie is "Earth is a memory worth fighting for," so I guess this takes place way in the future and Manhattan has turned into an ancient rocky ruin or something. Whatever the case is, Tom Cruise is here to figure it all out and save the day, as he always has to do, so we really should say thank you to him, for yet again saving us from doom. Or I guess in this scenario all of us are long, long dead, so... this movie is kind of depressing. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Eldercare Resource Center: Financial and Other Assistance to Help ...

We have been meaning to review veterans' option for assisted living, home care and nursing homes for some time now. Just in time for Veterans' Day, we have published our Veterans Guide to Paying for Long Term Care. In this guide, we look at all the financial assistance options available specifically for veterans in all areas of aging care regardless of the source of funding.

The majority of assistance comes from the Veterans Administration but surprisingly not all of it from VA Health Care or VA Medical Benefits. Veterans Home and Community Based Services, Veterans Pensions, supplemental insurance benefits for military retirees and other grant programs can help to offset the out-of-pocket costs of caring for an aging loved one who served this country. In addition to these programs, there are several forms of assistance specifically for veterans from non-governmental organizations. Non-profits also have programs whose benefits are intended to help US Veterans.

The organization of our Guide is intended to direct individuals by need. If a veteran is seeking residential care, the types of assistance are organized according to the type of residential care they require. If the individual is seeking home care, assistance is structured for the different types of home care. There is also a section on areas of assistance not provided by health care professionals or family caregivers. This includes the available options that help pay for durable or home medical equipment and assistive technologies that can reduce the veteran's dependence on others. Lastly, is the area of home modifications to account for service-related disabilities and other disabilities or physical challenges associated with aging.

Iranian jet fires on US military drone, Pentagon says - World News

Iran fired on a U.S. drone during its classified surveillance mission on Nov. 1, but the Pentagon did not disclose the incident until Nov. 8 -- perhaps giving warning to Iran that the U.S. could respond militarily, and that Iran's nuclear program will be a high priority for President Obama. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

    ?

    By Courtney Kube, NBC News

Two Iranian jets fired on a U.S. military drone, Pentagon officials said Thursday ? the first time such an action has been acknowledged by the United States.

At 4:50 a.m. EDT on Nov. 1, an Iranian SU-25 Frog Foot jet fired on a U.S. MQ-1 Predator drone that was conducting routine surveillance in international waters over the Arabian Gulf, Pentagon spokesman George Little said. The unarmed Predator was approximately 16 nautical miles off the Iranian coast when the Iranian jet began firing and was never in Iranian airspace, he said.

But a?senior defense official said two Iranian ground-attack jets were involved in the incident. The jets circled the Predator several times, firing 30-millimeter cannons at the unarmed drone.

"We don't know why," the Iranians were shooting at the drone, the official said, insisting the drone did not cross into Iranian airspace. The drone was "conducting routine maritime surveillance, watching ships," the official said.

The Iranian jets followed the Predator for several miles before turning away. The drone returned safely to base and wasn't hit by the Iranian gunfire.

President Barack Obama and Defense?Secretary Leon Panetta were notified of the incident early that morning, the Pentagon said. The White House would not comment on the incident, but a senior administration official confirmed to NBC News that Obama was told the day of the incident.?

Asked whether the Iranian jet was firing warning shots, Little said the jet "fired to take it down." He would not speculate on whether this constitutes an act of war.

The United States informed the Iranians that the U.S. military will continue surveillance flights over the international waters of the Arabian Gulf. Little said that was communicated by the State Department through Swiss officials.

Asked why the incident is just being revealed now ? more than one week after the incident and just two days after the presidential election ? Little said that the Pentagon does not talk about classified missions. He said that the information had been leaked to the media so he is acknowledging it.?

"There is absolutely no precedent" for an incident like this, he said.

The United States and its allies ? concerned about what they believe is Iran?s efforts to develop a nuclear weapons program and potential threat to Israel ? have imposed?a series of sanctions in an effort to get Tehran to back down.

On Thursday, the State Department announced another set of U.S. sanctions targeting Iranian government officials and departments that it says have blocked the Internet and other media, and otherwise prevented freedom of information and expression among the populace.
