Building A Successful Restaurant/Bar Concept From The Inside Out ...

NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 26, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ --?You have the vision and the passion, but lack the necessary experience and know-how to get your concept off of the ground.?Now what?

As CEO and Founder of Design the Planet, an award-winning marketing and branding firm based in New Orleans, LA, Adrienne Folse specializes in helping entrepreneurs develop the identity and branding for their restaurant or bar concept, particularly those planning to franchise or build multiple locations.?

Along the way, she has established proven, cost-effective solutions to common questions and obstacles new restaurateurs face.?"A potential concept needs several vital components to achieve optimum success," says Folse.?"Ensuring that a concept incorporates these key factors saves our clients time and money while improving their marketing significantly."??

1. Deliver a truly unique brand experience.

Before you move towards launching your concept, be sure you have taken the time to flesh out every aspect of your brand, and most importantly, what sets it apart from your competitors.?That special differentiator should be the base upon which you build all of your marketing and communications.

2. Provide superior service every single time.

How customers feel from start to finish at your establishment will make or break your reputation and is a huge deciding factor on the longevity of your brand. From hiring friendly, quality staff members to closely monitoring wait times and the quality of your product, micro-management of service will lead to positive reviews.

3. Never underestimate the power of advertising.

One of the costliest mistakes a business can make is dismissing the long-term value of promoting their brand through advertising. Advertising introduces your brand to prospective clients, keeps you top-of-mind among current customers, and dramatically increases brand name recognition. In other words, it's a necessity!

4. Remember that the devil is in the details.

In the service industry, it is important to remember that one minor problem could lead to long-term consequences professionally and financially. Always pre-prepare and have a back-up plan for your back-up plan.

5. Train and encourage every employee to be a "brand ambassador."

The people that work for you are a living representation of everything your brand stands for, which is why smart business owners hire only enthusiastic, friendly, and helpful individuals that are knowledgeable about the brand.

6. Triple-check absolutely everything.

If you want your concept to be taken seriously, you must be vigilant about ensuring that anything that represents your brand is polished and error-free. A misspelling on an expensive billboard will cost you much more than printing fees.

7. Maintain an up-to-date, consistent, and aesthetically pleasing brand identity.

Your logo is the very first impression you make on your potential clients, and it represents your initial opportunity to connect with your brand audience and draw them in. The amount of effort you put into creating an identity that is a true and compelling representation of your brand will be a powerful statement to consumers.

8. Leave everything else up to the professionals.

Making the decision to hire a marketing partner to assist you with promoting and maintaining your brand may seem like a costly decision, until you consider the benefits of having access to a veteran team of designers, writers, and specialists at your disposal. Their planning, expertise, and informed opinions are worth their weight in gold.

Stars favor bold colors and sophistication for Emmy fashion

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - At the first big red carpet event of the award season, stars donned bold colors and sophisticated designs in the sweltering heat at television's Emmy Awards on Sunday.

Bright yellow was a popular choice on the red carpet among the younger starlets and veteran actresses, including Julianne Moore (in full-length Christian Dior haute couture), "Homeland" star Claire Danes (in strapless, draped Lanvin), Leslie Mann (in yellow and white Naeem Khan), "Modern Family" Emmy winner Julie Bowen (in Monique Lhuillier), "New Girl" actress Hannah Simone (in asymmetric Pucci) and "Big Bang Theory's" Kaley Cuoco (in a strapless peplum Angel Sanchez).

"It would definitely get an award for bringing the dead back to life in its color," Bowen said of her dress backstage after winning the Emmy for best supporting actress in a comedy. "It was bold for me, but it's a classic shape."

Hal Rubenstein, fashion director at InStyle magazine, praised the bold color choices and selected Julianne Moore's full-length yellow Dior couture gown as his favorite.

"On one hand, it recalls the best of Dior, and yet it was mixed through with all the modernity that (designer) Raf Simons brought to the house of Jil Sander and now will bring to the house of Dior," Rubenstein said.

Despite an unseasonably hot September day with temperatures hovering near 90 degrees, actresses managed to look cool in blue, white and grey gowns.

"New Girl" star and nominee Zooey Deschanel wore a pastel blue Reem Acra dress with a full tulle skirt, keeping her hair and makeup simple. Heidi Klum turned out in a turquoise Alexandre Vauthier gown and starlet Hayden Panettiere was attired in a teal and gold asymmetric Marchesa dress.

Pale gray was a hot color for fall, seen on "Revenge" star Emily VanCamp in J Mendel, "Homeland" actress Morena Baccarin in Basil Soda and "Veep" star Anna Chlumsky in Christian Siriano.

Siriano also dressed "Mad Men" bombshell Christina Hendricks in a pale grey-white strapless gown, echoed by 12-year-old "Mad Men" starlet Kiernan Shipka in a pale grey strapless Zac Posen. Lucy Liu shimmered in a fitted, metallic Versace strapless dress.

"The dresses were more influenced by the weather than the trends from the runway for fall. The clothes were actually very bright and sophisticated, there were a lot of ethereal colors and bright colors ... the colors were big, bright and happy," Rubenstein said. "I thought people looked good."

Fashion stylist and expert Sam Saboura was less impressed, saying he was "underwhelmed."

"I thought it was a little subdued. I wasn't blown away by anyone in particular, but key trends tonight were a lot of strapless and A-line dresses," Saboura told Reuters. "Last year we saw a lot of flared gowns hugging the body with mermaid tails, but the A-line was a little softer, a little more relaxed."

Deep red jewel tones also proved popular, with comedian Tina Fey leading a host of stars in a strapless Vivienne Westwood, echoed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Vera Wang, Jena Malone in burgundy J Mendel and "Big Bang Theory" nominee Mayim Bialik in a modest but glamorous Pamella Roland number.

Actress Nicole Kidman in an Antonio Berardi column sheath with blue sequined embellishments had fashionistas and fans split. Saboura said he felt the dress "did not do her justice," while Rubenstein said it was "clean and modern."

Floral prints added interest to the red carpet. Julianna Margulies wore a strapless floral baroque-style Giambattista Valli gown and Ginnifer Goodwin donned a white and red embellished Monique Lhuillier, a choice that Saboura called "interesting."

"There was a lot of sparkle and shine," Saboura said. "I thought it'd be more garish than glamorous, and I thought it was actually understated glamour tonight."

New Study Finds IUD Best Form of Birth Control - Shape Magazine

When you think of birth control, you probably think of the pill, right? But it's not the only option?and it may not even be the best one. New guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) have positioned the intra-uterine device (IUD) and implants front and center in the birth-control debate.

Yesterday the ACOG replaced their 2007 guidelines with new ones that suggest that IUDs and implants should be viewed as "first-line recommendations" for all women seeking to prevent pregnancy, Today reports. In the past, guidelines instructed doctors to view the IUD and implants as good options, but not stress them as preferential for younger women and teens.

Implants and IUDs have been proven to be more effective at preventing pregnancy than other forms of birth control, but the pill remains the most popular option. Of the 62 percent of women who use contraceptives, 17 percent choose the pill, almost 17 percent use sterilization, and about 10 percent use condoms, according to a National Center for Health Statistics study conducted in 2006. However, both the pills and condoms require perfect compliance in order to be effective, and that doesn't always happen?for example, women may forget to take the pill every day, or the condom might break once in a while.

Related: Have a gynecologist appointment? Before you go, read the five tips to improve your visit to the OB-GYN.

With the IUD, patients don't have to worry about that: IUDs, which are small, T-shaped pieces of plastic or copper, are inserted into the uterus and can prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years, while implants are inserted under the skin of the upper arm and can prevent pregnancy for three years. Both options are a bit more invasive than simply swallowing a pill?they require a doctor to insert or remove them?but they're almost foolproof.

?There is a great deal of emerging data that these should be the top tier, the first line,? Tina Raine-Bennett, M.D., M.P.H., research director for the Women?s Health Research Institute at Kaiser Permanente Northern California and the chair of the ACOG committee, told Today. ?We?re saying to doctors, ?Here is compelling evidence that should guide your practice.??

Dr. Raine-Bennett also told Today that she thinks lingering fears over older models of IUDS may scare people from choosing them as birth control. In the 1970s, an IUD called the Dalkon Shield was sold, but it was later pulled from the market after many claimed it caused pelvic inflammatory disease. Newer models have been found to be safe.

Related: Is something up down there? Be sure it's not one of the four gynecological problems you shouldn't ignore.

The implant's been updated as well. The older model of implants included six pins that didn't always stay in place, so newer kinds use just one thin rod.

"The ones on the market today are extremely safe," Mary Fournier, M.D., an adolescent-medicine specialist at Chicago's Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital, told Huffington Post. "That is what everybody should be telling their patients."

It's important to note that like other forms of birth control, neither the IUD nor implant protect against STDs or STIs, so if you're at all worried about contracting one or you're unfamiliar with your sexual partner's history, you should also use condoms.

What do you think? Do you have an IUD or implant? Do you prefer the pill or some other form of birth control? Let's discuss!

Secondhand smoke takes large physical and economic toll

Friday, September 21, 2012

Secondhand smoke is accountable for 42,000 deaths annually to nonsmokers in the United States, including nearly 900 infants, according to a new UCSF study.

Altogether, annual deaths from secondhand smoke represent nearly 600,000 years of potential life lost ? an average of 14.2 years per person ? and $6.6 billion in lost productivity, amounting to $158,000 per death, report the researchers.

The study, which involved the first use of a biomarker to gauge the physical and economic impacts of cigarette smoke, revealed that secondhand smoke exposure disproportionately affects African Americans, especially black infants.

The new research reveals that despite public health efforts to reduce tobacco use, secondhand smoke continues to take a grievous toll on nonsmokers.

The study will be published Thursday, September 20, 2012 in the American Journal of Public Health.

"In general, fewer people are smoking and many have made lifestyle changes, but our research shows that the impacts of secondhand smoke are nonetheless very large,'' said lead author Wendy Max, PhD, professor of health economics at the UCSF School of Nursing and co-director of the UCSF Institute for Health & Aging. "The availability of information on biomarker-measured exposure allows us to more accurately assess the impact of secondhand smoke exposure on health and productivity. The impact is particularly great for communities of color.''

Exposure to secondhand smoke is linked to a number of fatal illnesses including heart and lung disease, as well as conditions affecting newborns such as low birth weight and respiratory distress syndrome.

About a decade ago, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ? using data from the California Environmental Protection Agency ? reported that 49,400 adults died annually as a result of secondhand smoke exposure. Additionally, the CDC reported that 776 infants annually died as a result of maternal exposure in utero.

Those widely-cited statistics relied on self-reporting to gauge the impact of secondhand smoke.

The new study led by UCSF shows that the statistics on fatalities resulting from for ischemic heart disease are 25 percent lower than previously reported (34,000 deaths compared to 46,000), but nearly twice as high for lung cancer deaths (7,333 deaths compared to 3,400). The new study also shows higher infant mortality (863 deaths compared to 776).

The researchers used serum cotinine ? a biomarker which detects the chemical consequences of exposure to tobacco smoke in the bloodstream - to measure exposure to secondhand smoke. That measurement reflects secondhand exposure in all settings, not just home or work, the authors wrote.

The scientists gauged the economic implications ? years of potential life lost and the value of lost productivity ? on different racial and ethnic groups.

Mortality was measured in two conditions for adults: lung cancer and ischemic heart disease; and four conditions for infants: sudden infant death syndrome, low birth weight, respiratory distress syndrome, and other respiratory conditions of newborns.

Of the 42,000 total deaths resulting from secondhand smoke, 80 percent were white, 13 percent were black, and 4 percent were Hispanic. The vast majority of deaths were caused by ischemic heart disease. Black babies accounted for a startling high 24 percent to 36 percent of all infant deaths from secondhand smoke exposure, the researchers reported, although blacks represented only 13 percent of the total U.S. population in 2006.

The value of lost productivity per death was highest among blacks ($238,000) and Hispanics ($193,000).

"Black adults had significantly greater exposure rates than did whites in all age groups,'' the authors wrote. "The highest secondhand smoke exposure was for black men aged 45 to 64 years, followed by black men age 20 to 44 years. Black women aged 20 to 44 years had a higher exposure rate (62.3 percent) than did any other women.''

"Our study probably under-estimates the true economic impact of secondhand smoke on mortality,'' said Max. "The toll is substantial, with communities of color having the greatest losses. Interventions need to be designed to reduce the health and economic burden of smoking on smokers and nonsmokers alike, and on particularly vulnerable groups.''

Blackstone nears deal to buy Vivint: sources

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Blackstone Group LP is nearing an agreement to buy home security provider Vivint, according to three people familiar with the matter, in a deal expected to value the company at as much as $2 billion.

An announcement could come as early as Wednesday, according to a separate source familiar with the matter.

Reuters reported on September 5 that Vivint, which provides home technology and automation services, is exploring a sale and has drawn interest from three private equity firms: Blackstone, Ares Management LLC and GTCR LLC.

Blackstone has prevailed over the other buyout firms in the auction, people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. They asked not to be named because the matter is not public.

Representatives for Vivint declined to comment. Blackstone did not respond to requests for comment.

Provo, Utah-based Vivint has about $260 million in earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) and could be valued at between $1.5 billion and $2 billion in a sale, sources told Reuters previously.

Formerly known as APX Alarm Security Solutions, Vivint is one of the largest providers of home automation and security services in North America, according to its website.

Vivint was founded by Todd Pedersen in 1999 and has continued to grow through investments from financial partners that have backed acquisitions over the past 13 years. A buyout by Blackstone would allow the company to expand further.

Its technology platform serves some 600,000 customers throughout the United States and Canada, connecting home smart systems, including alarms, air conditioning and energy management. It also provides severe weather alerts to customers at risk of tornadoes.

Management owns half of the company, while the other half is owned by Goldman Sachs Group Inc , as well as investment firms Jupiter Partners LLC and Peterson Partners.

Soap Dish: Legendary Soap Actor John Ingle Dies At Age 84

It is Soap Dish time again and this week I am dishing about a legendary actor who was died. General Hospital’s John Ingle passed away on Saturday at age 84, so sad. John died at his home on Saturday according to a posting by his family on Facebook. The news was just shared with fans today and all I can say is what a great loss the daytime community has suffered today. As many of you know Ingle was best known for his portrayal of Edward Quartermaine on the ABC hit soap opera General Hospital. In fact viewers got?a glimpse of Edward last week for the first time in months. It would be appear that those scenes would be the final scenes the actor had on the show. As the news of his passing spread cast members, crew members and fans have taken to social media like Facebook and Twitter to sing the praises of a truly talented man. I for one remember him not only as Edward but as Days Of Our Lives Mickey Horton for a couple of years. I have admired him for oh so many years. The news of his passing although very sad does not [...]

Oil prices below $97 as traders await key events

Oil prices traded virtually flat below $97 a barrel Tuesday as traders awaited a raft of news in Europe and the U.S. over the rest of the week that could have a big bearing in financial markets.

As well as a raft of scheduled events this week related to Europe's debt crisis, traders are waiting to see if the Federal Reserve will back another monetary stimulus on Thursday following a two-day policy meeting. Speculation that the Obama administration was preparing for a release of strategic oil reserves also kept the buying in check.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for October delivery was up 6 cents to $96.60 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract finished up 12 cents to $96.54 on Monday on the Nymex.

In London, Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, was up 9 cents to $114.90 on the ICE Futures exchange.

Natalie Rampono, commodities analyst at ANZ Banking Group in Melbourne, Australia said one factor weighing on prices was speculation that the administration of President Barack Obama was closely studying the possibility of an emergency release of oil reserves in order to keep prices down.

On Friday, the U.S. government reported the economy added a weaker-than-expected 96,000 jobs last month, increasing the likelihood of another round of stimulus from the U.S. Federal Reserve when its policy makers meet later this week.

That belief has helped support oil prices in recent days, Rampono said.

Investors will also be monitoring new information on U.S. stockpiles of crude and refined products.

Data for the week ending Sep. 7 is expected to show draws of 3.3 million barrels in crude oil stocks and of 2.3 million barrels in gasoline stocks, according to a survey of analysts by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos.

The American Petroleum Institute will release its report on oil stocks later Tuesday, while the report from the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration ? the market benchmark ? will be out on Wednesday.

In other Nymex energy futures trading, wholesale gasoline was up 0.6 cent to $3.03 a gallon. Heating oil added 0.37 cent to $3.1705 a gallon, while natural gas rose 0.3 cent to $2.815 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Do social networking web sites make you fat?

ScienceDaily (Sep. 10, 2012) ? Time spent on social networking sites comes at the expense of other activities -- including physical activity, new research by the University of Ulster has revealed.

That is one of the findings of a study presented at the annual conference of the British Psychological Society's Division of Health Psychology in Liverpool at the weekend.

Around 350 students at the University of Ulster completed an online survey -measuring social networking activity and levels of physical activity.

The research was carried out by Masters degree student Emer O'Leary, under the supervision of psychologists, Dr Wendy Cousins and Dr Tadhg Macintyre at the University of Ulster.

The results showed that the vast majority of students used social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter spend an average of one hour a day online. In the physical activity questionnaire, just over half the students were classified as; 'moderately active' and a third were 'high activity', with a minority (12.7 per cent) falling into the 'low physical activity' group. A quarter of the respondents said they took part in team sports.

When the results were analysed, researchers found that the amount of time spent on social network websites was negatively correlated with the respondents' level of physical activity in the previous week. Facebook fans were also less likely to take part in team sports, but this effect was less pronounced.

Dr Cousins said: "Time is a finite resource, so time spent in social networking must come at the expense of other activities. Our study suggests that physical activity may be one of those activities.

"Our findings are intriguing, but we have not conclusively demonstrated that social networking causes lower levels of physical activity. We will need to carry out more research to see if it really is a case of Facebook makes you fat rather than Twitter makes you fitter."

Useful Nutrition Tips To Make You Healthier : Premier Diet and Fitness

Posted by haleyjonas on Monday, September 10, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

When it comes to the topic of nutrition, many people often think of boring salads that include iceberg lettuce and hothouse tomatoes. But, healthy eating need not be such an unpleasant and dreaded experience. Nutrition can be an exciting and fulfilling part of your life. Use these tips if you want to learn how to make the most nutritious choices when it comes to your food.

You need to use your calorie allowance on good, healthy foods. Your system will react positively if you consume your calories in foods that are vitamin rich and nutritious, such as vegetables, whole grains and protein. The quantity you eat and what you actually eat are equally important.

TIP! Breakfast should consist of a balance of proteins, carbohydrates and fresh fruit. Besides refined sugar and artificial sweeteners, many cereals contain unhealthy preservatives and even trans fats.

When you stop feeling motivated, think about why you have started eating in a more healthy way. Rekindling motivation will vary from person to person, but going back to your initial goals will help fire you up to achieving them.

When preparing mushrooms, it?s very important to ensure they are well-cooked. By cooking them well, you will eliminate the carcinogens that mushrooms are made of. These carcinogens can cause lots of damage to your body. It?s important to stay as healthy as you can, as this can directly affect fat burning abilities in your body.

TIP! Try not to make meat the only source of food that you get protein from. Protein can be found in many other foods.

Be careful to avoid excessive amounts of salt and sugar. Gradually decrease the amount of these ingredients when cooking. Reducing the amount of salt and sugar you eat will lead to better health. If you gradually reduce your consumption, you are much less likely to crave what you are missing and quit.

All too many low-fat foods make up for the flavorful fat they are missing with added sugar or artificial sweeteners. If a food is a low-calorie food, look at what the food is made of.

TIP! Food as a reward is not the best nutritional habit to instill in your child. Try offering attention instead.

Not only does it taste great, there?s also 14g of protein per 100g of Quinoa. Quinoa is not just tasty, but it?s versatile, as well. It can be served up in a pilaf for a great meal, or mixed with brown sugar and apples for a delicious breakfast.

Using a web based diet tracker is a simple way to track your meals. Look more closely at what you?re eating if you gained weight. If you are fairly inactive and/or eat foods high in carbohydrates or fats, these facts may be contributing to your gain. The meal tracker will just help keep you more accountable with what you are eating.

TIP! Most individuals think of food intake, rather than liquid intake when thinking about nutrition. Many drinks greatly increase your caloric intake.

Juicing is a great strategy for obtaining all the essential nutrients from fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. Try blending some vegetables into juices that would ordinarily be made with fruit alone. You can add a little bit more zip to carrot juice with ginger. Jalapenos and other peppers are a great way to give your blend a hot kick!

Always eat colored food. When you eat bright veggies, you are more likely to get beneficial ingredients and less likely to get unhealthy ones. Try to ensure that each meal you eat includes at least one piece of a brightly colored fruit or vegetable. Never skin your produce unless it?s required to eat the fruit or vegetable. Potato skins, carrot skins, apple skins, and most other fruit and vegetable skins, contain a whole lot of nutrients.

TIP! Five is the magic number when it comes to nutrition. This is the magic number of fruit and vegetable servings you should be eating each day.

You can feel and look better by practicing better nutrition. One of the first steps to improving your diet is to cut down on your consumption of refined, processed sugar. Things like soda and fruit juice can sometimes slip under the radar. Sodas are high in sugars and high fructose corn syrup. These can be bad for your health. See how much better your diet is without that sugar. You will start to feel better and look better too.

TIP! When baking, use whole wheat flour rather than white to up the nutrition value. White flour is heavily processed and is lacking in nutrients and fiber.

Greek yogurt is an excellent source of protein for any diet. Greek yogurt can also serve as an excellent stand-in for sour cream in cooking or baking, especially if you use the non-fat variety. It also works to replace any cream-type ingredient. Greek yogurt has even higher protein than regular yogurt. You can try incorporating it into sauces where sour cream or regular yogurt is called for, as well as any other recipes you can come up with.

Every country has a great lineup of delicious foods, so take time to do research and start trying out recipes you?ve never heard of before. Eating lots of ethnic food can break up the boredom of eating the same food every week. This type of eating can enhance your nutrition as well.

TIP! Receiving the proper nutrition can improve both your physical and mental health. If your body lacks certain vitamins, it can cause you to be depressed and sometimes lethargic.

Make it a habit to consume foods that contain calcium on a regular basis. These foods include cheese, dark greens, sardines, soy milk, nuts, milk, and dried beans. In order to maintain your teeth and build strong bones, you must get sufficient calcium. Calcium deficiency is quite common, especially in women, and can cause osteoporosis. Osteoporosis starts slowly, but can quickly progress into a serious illness leading to weak bones.

In reasonable amounts, fruit or vegetable juices can replace some servings of raw fruits and veggies. In moderation, juice gives you a healthy serving of vitamins and minerals without the hassle of preparing and cooking whole veggies or fruits. Consider drinking your fruit juice through a straw so as to avoid damaging your teeth.

TIP! Many people are starting to make use of coupons in their weekly shopping. You can turn on the TV and see people managing to get baskets full of food for just pennies on the dollar.

Keep a diary to track your results in your weight loss journey. You could, for instance, establish a chart of your blood pressure, if this is something you have been struggling with. Keep a log of the inches and pounds you lose. These records will give you a window into the improvements you have made in your life.

Protein is an important part of what your body needs. Eggs make for a great source of this, so do your best to try to eat one a day in order to ensure your body is getting the nutrition it deserves. If you?re trying to watch your fat and cholesterol, eating the egg whites and skipping the yolks is a good idea. Egg whites are loaded with vitamins and nutrients, yet lack cholesterol and fat.

TIP! Do not focus too much on dessert. Limit the dessert that your family eats to only a couple nights a week.

Ask your doctor if you can consume alcohol when you have diabetes. Blood sugar levels can be greatly reduced when you drink alcohol, which makes restraint a priority.

Occasionally omitting grains from your diet is an excellent nutritional move. For a while, humans lived off fruit, veggies, nuts, meat and beans. Grains have only been in existence for a relatively short while. You could start feeling better by avoiding grains.

TIP! A healthy, well balanced diet consists of a proper balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Make it a goal to allot 20% of your caloric intake to fats, about 30% to proteins, and the remaining 50% can go to carbohydrates.

As you can see, eating a balanced, nutritious diet is easy and fun. There is a lot of room for creativity in the world of food, so it is a wonderful way to enhance your quality of life without limiting yourself. These tips are only the beginning to a new, healthier you!

Getting your child to eat new foods can be complicated. Try getting your child to like them by touching and looking, rather than tasting at first. If the texture sounds interesting, they may want to try it.

TIP! One key nutrition tip is to invest in a blender that can be used to make fruit smoothies. A high-quality blender will allow you to cut out fattening ice cream and replace it with nutritous fruit and vegetable smoothies.

Clearer look at how iron reacts in the environment: New way to study electron transfer in semiconductors shines through rust

ScienceDaily (Sep. 7, 2012) ? Using ultrafast X-rays, scientists for the first time have watched how quickly electrons hop their way through rust nanoparticles.

This gives key insight to how iron oxide, one of the most abundant minerals in soil, behaves and alters the condition of soil and water around it. This also demonstrates the potential of time-resolved X-ray and optical methods to study chemical reactions at the subnanoscale in other semiconductors.

Scientists have long known that certain minerals, redox active ions and biological proteins can exchange electrons to initiate chemical changes in the mineral. But the process of how electrons hop from atom to atom inside a nanoparticle to facilitate change has been too fast to see until now. The same process controls charge collection in solar energy devices involving metal oxides, and thus this work may have relevance to new energy technologies.

Using the Advanced Photon Source and Center for Nanoscale Materials at the Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory, an international team of scientists from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Argonne, the Technical University of Denmark, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and the Polish Academy of Sciences detailed how electrons hop inside iron particles. This plays a significant role in controlling how the iron reacts with the environment.

Iron is an integral part of the natural environment and many important chemical reactions involve changes in iron that are caused by an electron being transferred to the iron from other minerals, water or biological agents. Electron transfer to iron(III) oxides creates iron(II) sites in the mineral. But the iron(II) site is not fixed, as the electron can hop to other sites. Because iron(II) is more soluble than iron(III), when an electron hops to an iron atom at the mineral surface, that iron(II) atom can be released into solution, and dramatically affect the chemistry and mineralogy of soils and surface waters.

Iron reduction is particularly important for the mobility of contaminants in the environment. Because many contaminants, most notably uranium, bind to iron, the change also can affect the spread of these contaminants. A soluble form of iron will help spread the contamination while iron with larger particles can be used to trap contaminants in filter systems. Knowledge of how fast iron oxides undergo reaction and dissolution -- controlled in part by the electron hopping rates -- will help the management of some contaminant remediation efforts.

"We believe that this work is the starting point for a new area of time-resolved geochemistry," said Benjamin Gilbert, a scientist at LBNL. "Time-resolved science seeks to understand chemical reaction mechanisms by making various kinds of "movies" that depict in real time how atoms and electrons move during reactions. We have imported some of these ideas and approaches into geochemistry, and are very excited about the future possibilities."

The research team detailed their findings and how they made these "movies" in a paper "Electron Small Polarons and Their Mobility in Iron (Oxyhdr)oxide Nanoparticles" published Sept. 6 in the journal Science.

Electron transfer was only made viewable by recent advances in light source technology that allow scientists to take a quick succession of pictures to track the action of the electron traveling through the iron oxide. The journey takes pico-to-nano-seconds, depending on temperature and the structure of the iron oxide.

"Much like a sports photographer must use a camera with a very fast shutter speed to capture an athlete in motion without blurring, to be able to watch electrons moving, we needed to use a exceedingly short and very bright (powerful) pulse of X-rays," said Jordan Katz, the lead author on the Science paper, formerly of LBNL and now a scientist at Denison University. "For this study, the X-rays were produced at Argonne National Laboratory's Advanced Photon Source."

Because iron oxide is a semiconductor, the research team had to develop a way other than an electric charge to jump-start the process. They adapted a pump-probe technique from research in ultrafast science and also used for nanomaterial photovoltaic materials. First, they used laser light to excite a dye molecule sensitized on the surface of the iron to inject an electron into the iron. They used femtosecond optical transient absorption spectroscopy at the Center for Nanoscale Materials to show that the light-initiated electron transfer was extremely fast -- much faster than the thermally-driven electron hopping they sought to measure. Then they captured different instantaneous snapshots of the rapid electron transfer process by using ultra-short pulses of X-rays like the shutter on a camera, collecting a sequence of X-ray spectra that indicated the location of the electrons on the subnanosecond timescale.

This technique can be used to study all types of electron transfer in nature and in synthesized materials such as nanofilms aimed at making solar cells more efficient.

"This opens up studies with many other semiconductor materials," said Xiaoyi Zhang, a scientist at the APS. "The same technique of using a light-induced electron to initiate chemistry can be applied to studies of solar cells, hydrogen generation, catalysis and electrochemical (battery) energy storage. It can provide new insights into how electrons or energy flow inside materials."

The APS is uniquely situated to undertake this type of study.

"We used two different specialties of the APS," said Karena Chapman, a scientist at the APS. "The APS is a scientific hub for understanding dynamic processes in nanoparticles. As the materials we investigate become more complex, we only completely understand them by combining what we learn from several different techniques and beamlines."

Beamline 11-ID-D provides an up-close view of individual electron hops by allowing scientists to look at action on multiple time scales so that they can see all of the processes that underlie electron or energy transfer. Scientists can look at action as fast as 80 picoseconds, or 80 trillionths of a second, and the planned APS upgrade will enable even faster viewing. That will allow scientists to see the final step in the process, the electron being injected from the photosensitized molecule to the iron or another semiconductor. That process takes up to several picoseconds.

At the same time, beamline 11-ID-B, the U.S.'s first and only dedicated pair-distribution-function beamline, provided scientists with more of a global view of the resulting atomic structure, which is out of reach for other techniques. Taken together, all of these techniques provided the most complete picture ever of electron hopping and the transformation of iron (III) to iron (II).

Amazon reveals Kindle Fire HD, plus $159 entry-level Fire

8 hrs.

At a press conference in Santa Monica, Calif. Thursday, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos revealed a slightly upgraded $159?version of the first 7-inch tablet, then wowed the crowd with 7-inch and 8.9 inch versions of the all-new?Kindle Fire HD.?

Read our live coverage of Amazon's press event here

The entry level Fire will cost just $159, a $40 price drop from the first. Meanwhile,?Amazon says it delivers?40 percent faster performance and longer battery life, with a faster processor and?twice the RAM.?You can order it today, and it ships Sept. 14.

But the bigger deal is Kindle Fire?HD, which comes in two sizes, a 7-inch version for $199 (also?available Sept. 14), and a 8.9-inch edition for $299 (available Nov. 20), each starting?with 16GB of internal storage.

If you feel like spending more, there will be a $499 version of the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD that will run on a 4G LTE cellular data network, and come with a $50-per-year data plan that gives you 250MB of data access per month. It will have 32GB of storage.

Kindle 'Paperwhite' e-reader has?higher resolution

The specs
The 8.9-inch model has 1920?x 1200 resolution with a dense 254 pixels per inch (just shy of the current iPad's 264 ppi). It's 8.8mm thick and weighs 20 ounces. (For comparison's sake,?the iPad is 9.4mm thick, and 23 ounces, but it does have a slightly?larger screen, measuring 9.7 inches in diagonal.)

Keen observers may note that Amazon went in Apple's direction with screen dimensions. Instead of going with a 16x9 ratio, which would only permit a 1920 x 1080 resolution, they went a little fatter, for a more pleasant portrait view, with those extra pixels.

The screen resolution on the 7-inch HD is 1280 x 800. This qualifies as "HD" because it will deliver 720p video natively, and it will look great on that smaller screen. The original 7-inch Kindle Fire?display is?1024 x 600, so it's a healthy bump up from a screen that was already pretty easy on the eyes.

The Kindle Fire HD tablets get a new email app, a custom Facebook app, and a Skype app for video chatting. Which means, yes, the Kindle Fire HD tablets have a front-facing camera.

Bezos says that with dual-band Wi-Fi and stereo speakers, plus a powerful Texas Instruments OMAP 4 processor and a reduced-glare?screen that is easier to see in sunlight, the tablets should give competitors such as the iPad and the Google Nexus 7 tablet a run for their money.

The standout $499 version, equipped with 4G LTE, may prove to be a solid value. It's not confirmed that the carrier is AT&T, though the logo matches the one AT&T uses. And though you may balk at only getting?250MB of cellular data?per month, even on a plan that costs you just $50 per year, bear this in mind: Not only will you use your tablet mostly in Wi-Fi situations, but the deal itself comes with 20GB of Amazon cloud storage and a $10 Amazon Appstore credit. Just something to mull over.

The features
Rather than run through the long list of new Fire HD?features Bezos revealed, I thought I'd just show you this video highlighting them all:
