Alto from AOL Visually Organizes Your Email into Neat Stacks (and We've Got Invites)

Alto from AOL Visually Organizes Your Email into Neat Stacks (and We've Got Invites)Alto is a new web-based email client from AOL (yes, the folks best known for "You've got mail!"). In addition to syncing with Aol Mail, the service syncs with Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, and even iCloud to make your inbox more attractive.

Alto from AOL Visually Organizes Your Email into Neat Stacks (and We've Got Invites)The most notable feature of Alto is its "Stacks" arrangement of particular emails. Stacks are essentially filters for your inbox that are arranged in neat squares. Alto sets up some Stacks for you, pulling emails from daily deals sites, retailers, and social notifications all in their own groups. Clicking on one of those Stacks brings you to a tab where the emails are arranged in a grid. Alto also crawls your email to find all the photos and attachments and filter those into Stacks.

You can create your own Stack by dragging an email from the message list to a blank square. That will set up a filter from that sender, but you can add other senders to the Stack and, under options, add additional settings (e.g., subject words).

Alto from AOL Visually Organizes Your Email into Neat Stacks (and We've Got Invites)Emails are presented in a scrolling list on the left, with quick action icons beneath each to delete, star, or snooze each message (a handy feature). You can also perform batch actions with the little actions button at the top.

Alto from AOL Visually Organizes Your Email into Neat Stacks (and We've Got Invites)Gmail shortcuts work here, your own labels are shown as folders, there are links to Google Drive and Calendar (if you like Gmail), and if you connect Facebook, you can get status updates from your friends here as well.

I experienced one issue with syncing, after not having used the service for a few weeks. However, that seemed to fix itself after I logged in again and waited a bit. The developers say they're actively working on improving sync performance, with a big update coming next week.

All in all, I found the webmail client to be fluid and easy to use. Its attractive design is like a breath of fresh air compared to just seeing a giant list of emails and labels in Gmail.

If you have a lot of email add-ons or labs set up, Alto, like other email clients, might not be for you. But if you want a fresher look for your inbox, give Alto a try.

A note on security: For Gmail accounts, Alto uses OAuth to get an access token, so it doesn't get your Gmail password. For other accounts, you do need to enter your passwords, which the AOL/Alto team says are heavily encrypted. Some limited account data (email metadata, up to 60-day cache of photos, etc.) are stored on their servers. You can read more about Alto's security and privacy measures here.

Alto was announced a little while ago, but is in private beta right now. Lifehacker readers can get in now with the SurveyMonkey link below (the first 5,000 will get in within 24-48 hours; after that, others will be approved a little bit later.)

Five questions that will be answered by UFC 155

The UFC's end-of-the-year cards are usually stacked. Despite injuries, UFC 155 is no different. It features intriguing bouts that will answer some burning questions.

Did a knee injury hold back Cain Velasquez the first time he fought Junior dos Santos? When the two first met up last November, Velasquez reportedly had a badly injured knee. He was knocked out in 64 seconds. This time a (seemingly) healthy Velasquez will get to show if he deserves the heavyweight belt.

Has Chris Leben returned to form, for really real this time? Since Leben was on the original "Ultimate Fighter," he has been a man who wrestled with his demons. Most recently, those demons took the form of a banned pain killer which resulted in a one-year suspension from the UFC. Against Derek Brunson, Leben can show he's again the man who knocked out Wanderlei Silva.

Can Tim Boetsch be the next guy to challenge Anderson Silva? Though his original bout with Chris Weidman was called off because of an injury to Weidman, Boetsch still has another opportunity to show he can beat up opponents. He wants a chance to beat up Silva,* and this bout with Costa Phillippou is an opportunity for Boetsch's fighting to shine.

Or should Alan Belcher be the man to take on Silva? It's been more than three years since Belcher lost a fight. His last four fights have been stoppage wins. An impressive win over Yushin Okami could put him in line to fight for the middleweight belt.*

Is Todd Duffee still the knockout artist who once graced the octagon? Back in 2009, Duffee knocked out Tim Hague in a mere seven seconds. After that, the hype train was running behind him full steam. It was derailed when Mike Russow came back to knock Duffee out in the third round of their bout. Duffee was cut from the UFC, and is getting another shot at the octagon on Saturday. He'll fight Philip De Fries on the Facebook preliminaries, and get a chance to show if he can still knock people out very quickly.

*Assuming the next middleweight belt is based on competitiveness and earning a title shot by fighting, not by calling opponents out. Considering what has happened recently in the UFC welterweight and light heavyweight divisions, there are no guarantees.

European envoy urges Bahrain to free prisoners

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) ? The head of a European Parliament human rights delegation is urging Bahrain to release political prisoners as a step toward easing an anti-government uprising in the strategic Gulf nation.

The visit comes less than a week after Bahrain's crown prince called for new efforts for talks between the Sunni leadership and the kingdom's majority Shiites, who seek a greater political voice.

Inese Vaidere of Latvia told reporters Thursday that authorities should free all "prisoners of conscience" as a crucial step toward negotiations in the 22-month uprising.

Vaidere said the European team met with jailed opposition leaders including Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, who has been sentenced to life in prison.

More than 55 people have died in Bahrain's near nonstop unrest since February 2011. Bahrain is home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

Obama sets January deadline for gun proposals

(AP) ? Spurred by a horrific elementary school shooting, President Barack Obama vowed to send Congress new policy proposals for reducing gun violence by January.

"This time, the words need to lead to action," Obama said Wednesday. He tasked Vice President Joe Biden with leading an administration-wide effort to create the new recommendations and pledged to push for their implementation without delay.

The president, who exerted little political capital on gun control despite a series of mass shootings in his first term, bristled at suggestions that he had been silent on the issue during his first four years in office. But he acknowledged that Friday's deadly shooting had been "a wake-up call for all of us."

Twenty children and six adults were killed when a man carrying a military-style rifle stormed Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., Friday morning.

The president also called on Congress Wednesday to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 and to pass legislation that would close the gun show "loophole," which allows people to purchase firearms from private dealers without a background check. Obama also said he wanted Congress to pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity ammunition clips.

"The fact that this problem is complex can no longer be an excuse for doing nothing," Obama said. "The fact that we can't prevent every act of violence doesn't mean we can't steadily reduce the violence."

The president's announcement Wednesday underscores the urgency the White House sees in formulating a response to the Newtown shooting. The massacre has prompted several congressional gun rights supporters to consider new legislation to control firearms, and there is some concern that their willingness to engage could fade as the shock and sorrow over the Newtown shooting eases.

Obama said it was "encouraging" to see people of different backgrounds and political affiliations coming to an understanding that the country has an obligation to prevent such violence.

Appealing to gun owners, Obama said he believes in the Second Amendment and the country's strong tradition of gun ownership. And he said "the vast majority of gun owners in America are responsible."

"I am also betting that the majority, the vast majority, of responsible law-abiding gun owners would be some of the first to say that we should be able to keep an irresponsible, law-breaking few from buying a weapon of war," Obama said.

Obama also tasked the Biden-led team with considering ways to improve mental health resources and address ways to create a culture that doesn't promote violence. The departments of Justice, Education, Health and Human Services, and Homeland Security, along with outside groups and lawmakers, will all be part of the process.

Biden's prominent role in the process could be an asset for the White House in getting gun legislation through Congress. The vice president spent decades in the Senate and has been called on by Obama before to use his long-standing relationships with lawmakers to build support for White House measures.

The president challenged the National Rifle Association, the country's most powerful gun lobby and key backer of many Republican politicians, to join the broader effort to reduce gun violence as well.

"Hopefully they'll do some self-reflection," Obama said of the NRA.

The NRA made its first comments since the shooting on Tuesday, promising to offer "meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again."

Obama said that while taking the necessary steps to reduce gun violence would take commitment and compromise, he said it could be achieved if Washington summons "even one tiny iota of the courage of those teachers, that principal in Newtown summoned on Friday."

L'Wren Scott Will Show At London Fashion Week Next Season

We got a liiiiitle bit of LFW excitement today, as WWD reports L'Wren Scott will be moving to London next season for her fall 2013 collection. Last season she had appointments in her Paris showroom, and for the past five years she had intimate sit down lunches in New York attended by a small group of press and buyers. But now she's coming across the channel to Landan.

?I liked the idea of not being tied to one place, one time, one format,? Scott told WWD. ?My brand is now expanding in Europe and showing in London this season feels right. We always move to our own rhythm.?

The American fashion designer has a spot in LFW on Sunday, February 17, but "the venue and format are yet to be determined." So we've not got many details yet, but anyone else predicting a Mick Jagger London Fashion Week FROW sighting? Michelle Obama, Uma Thurman and Reese Witherspoon have all worn L'Wren so this LFW could be an A List affair *fingers crossed*.

It's all change for the designer, as L'Wren Scott also moved into the world of beauty this month, as on the 12th December she launched her first fragrance with a hefty ?120 price tag. Scott said to WWD that she "always wanted to go into fragrance." She also admitted that in the two year development of the fragrance her boyfriend Mick Jagger "definitely noticed a lot of perfume testing going on."

Take a look at what we can expect from L'Wren Scott's show at LFW by clicking through the gallery below of her previous collections:

The dos and don'ts of setting up an ecommerce business in China

Printer

Print

Posted 18 December 2012 11:05am by David Moth with 0 comments

As of December 2011 there were more than 190m online shoppers in China, a massive 20% growth on the previous year.

Yet there is also huge untapped potential, as only 38% of the Chinese online population has actually used ecommerce.

This obviously makes it a very attractive marketplace for any online retailer, but there are a number of obstacles that have to be negotiated before a business can even consider selling online to Chinese consumers.

It?s a topic we investigated in more detail in our new ?China: Digital Market Landscape Report? as well as a blog post looking at the state of digital marketing and ecommerce in the country.

And to find out more about the challenges of setting up an ecommerce business in China, I spoke to eCommera?s director of insights services Debbie Bond...

What regulations should businesses be aware of when looking to trade online in China?

To launch online in China you will need to have a Chinese business license, which can take up to a year and requires significant transfer of funds to a local account; a retail license, which can only be applied for once a business license is obtained; and a wholesale license.

Once these are in place you can then start thinking about the operational side of the business because the next step will be to register the online operational detail and register as a Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise.

The time it can take to get online should not be underestimated, but effort should be driven by the likely rewards.

Which industries are achieving the biggest growth online at the moment? Where are the greatest opportunities?

China?s ecommerce growth will be further accelerated by the growing propensity of the population to shop online. Although one in five Internet users in the world are Chinese, ecommerce is still an emerging industry in China.?

The expenditure per capita for online sales in China today is only 5% of that in the US, indicating tremendous potential for growth.

Mainland Chinese consumers now account for more than 6% of all worldwide luxury consumption, spending an estimated $16.1bn on luxury products in 2011.?

This excludes significant purchases made by Chinese consumers in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and while travelling overseas, which are estimated at an additional 80%.?

Burberry in London alone estimates that 30% of its sales are from overseas visitors, and this proportion is increasing.

Who are the major ecommerce players in China? Are there any successful online-only retailers?

Retailers such as H&M, Zara and Burberry have entered this market and are at the very beginning of their journey in China.?

Many brands however, are already international but nevertheless lack an online channel, as they rely currently mostly on intermediaries, mainly retailers.

Will china's Internet continue to have distinctively Chinese characteristics? Some differences from the West will fade as the industry and China's economy mature and the country's internet population grows older and richer.?

Other features will probably persist, for example the dominance of three digital conglomerates, Alibaba, Baidu and Tencent.

What are the main challenges with web design? It surely can?t be as simple as just translating the English copy into Chinese.

To sell directly to Chinese consumers, retailers and brand owners will need a product catalogue and product designs that match local tastes, as well as an ecommerce site that contains local content and prices, offering a user experience that is tailored to local requirements.

Some companies have invested huge sums in getting their native sites right in territories that they understand and will know how hard that can be. ?So a similar focus on Chinese sites will be critical.

What are the common methods of payment? Do Chinese consumers tend to pay with credit cards or are alternative payment methods (e.g. PayPal) popular?

The situation is changing dramatically. As the Chinese economy booms, the level of disposable income increases and this causes a rise in popularity of credit cards, and other forms of personal consumer credit.?

New economies traditionally tend to embrace new ideas faster than established economies, so it is reasonable to expect the Chinese to embrace new innovations in payment and mobile commerce.?

However, where a lot of infrastructure is required to enable that to happen, this may take a lot longer.

What do you need to consider for fulfilment and returns??

Achieving the desired customer service levels and operational economics might require a local logistics operation. This in turn requires consideration of fulfilment issues, such as the clearance of goods into China, the lease of a warehouse and the recruitment of a team to operate the warehouse.?

Equally, local delivery partners need to be selected not just on their level of national coverage, but also on their ability to meet local expectations, such as the handling of cash for cash transactions, and the handling of returns.

Naturally, the concept of national coverage is very different in China, where there are vast distances between urban centres, so companies will be challenged on finding the ideal strategy for warehouse locations and carrier mix.

Is it feasible for an ecommerce business to be able to service the entire country from launch, or do you need to roll out in the major cities first then expand?

Some experts are of the opinion that you should test the market first before doing an all-out launch, as the market in China is quite conservative about new things that come onto their radar. ?

Once the brand or retailer has provided some credible information to the consumer about what the product does or how it can benefit them they will then start talking about it.

What can be launched nationally is the delivery aspect of the ecommerce operation, but it all needs careful monitoring; ultimately what is important is that the customer is offered the right service.

And what about customer service? Which are the most common customer contact points?

Whether retailers and brand owners operate a customer services team from their home country or locally, or delegate customer services to a third party, they will need to ensure all members of the team have a comprehensive knowledge of both the brand and the products and are able to offer the exceptional level of service that customers expect in China. ?

Chinese consumer?s expectations are different to consumers in other countries; service is written into their culture, so what they have always expected from local businesses, they will expect from international companies.

How advanced is digital marketing in China? Will ecommerce sites need to invest heavily in offline marketing?

Digital marketing is changing quite rapidly in China due to a growing population of affluent consumers. ?The consumer in China is very wary of online advertising and information used across these channels.?

However, Chinese shoppers trust information and recommendations from their peers on blogs, social networks and user review sites far more than official brand communications.?

Over 40% of the Chinese shoppers in a survey by Boston Consulting Group said they had both read and posted online product reviews, which is nearly twice as many than in the US.?

Because of the online trust issue some offline marketing will need to take place to help establish a certain amount of trust for the brand or retailer.

The opportunity for foreign companies is clear, because they can effectively leapfrog many of the traditional marketing techniques that work at home and investigate marketing alongside social media.?

While this still has its own challenges in any territory, the truth is, the level of innovation is driving success quickly.

Is search as important for traffic in China as it is in the UK? What are the main points for businesses to consider when starting out?

Search engines in China have been very much regulated by government and businesses need to work around this. This market is learning fast but in some respects remains sceptical. ?

The biggest challenge when setting up in China is the red tape. Trying to skip or bypass regulation will only mean setbacks and delays.?

Red tape is a fact of life, but more so in China, so it makes sense for companies to accept this as the price of doing business there.

TMall, for instance, has become the platform of choice for brands entering the Chinese ecommerce landscape, not only because of its massive user base but also because it is familiar, trusted and convenient for consumers.?

It?s the first port of call for people all over China when researching and purchasing branded products online.

How important is m-commerce in China? What are conversion rates like?

Mobile commerce is still an emerging concept in China and as the consumer starts to engage more with technology this will start to have an impact on what can be available across various channels. ?

There is still a large gap between those who have access within large cities, and those who have limited access in rural locations.

That said, the mobile phone is fast becoming the standard communications tool for Chinese people of all ages, so they already see it as a hub for m-commerce, in contrast to the fixed PC, where total numbers of much smaller. ?

However, Chinese people like the contact with the brand and therefore a simple checkout will also be very important.

What I learned in real estate today. Each day is something new.

Well I learn something new every day in property management or real estate. Just when you think you?ve heard it all. We do not take on new clients who require the use of supplemental housing. The reasons are numerous but we?ll leave those out of this discussion. As for today we learned that specifically one particular housing authority in our area requires the installation of a working fire extinguisher. Now on the surface this is a great thing. However in application this triggers another part of the property code which says that if a fire extinguisher is onsite at a property it must be inspected biannually be a specially licensed technician. This is another bill for the owner that typically is a non-issue. These programs seems like a sure thing however I can tell you that this same housing authority which will remain nameless for the purpose of this blog, has yet to pay rent for December. 18 days later?we?ve called and email 3 people all the way to the top. They check was supposed to be in the mail last Tuesday. A week later no check. When these folks go on vacation, good luck. They will simply not send out checks and no one will help out or return calls. If you?re thinking about leasing and utilizing supplemental housing I would not advise it. While a government check sounds like a good deal, it forces you to deal with the government.

Can exercise detox your body? It's not about the ... - TODAY Health

By Reuters

The word "detoxification" is flung around the fitness community as frequently as kettlebells are swung.

Yoga teachers regularly speak of detoxifying twists, aerobics instructors of detoxifying sweat, dieters of detoxifying fasts. But health professionals are skeptical.

"If you start talking about exercising to detoxify, there's no scientific data," said Dr. Elizabeth Matzkin, chief of women's sports medicine at Harvard Medical School. "The human body is designed to get rid of what we don't need."

The same applies to fasting.

"No good scientific data supports any of those cleanses, where you drink juice, or (only) water for a week," she said.

Exercise is important, Matzkin added, because it enables our body to do what it is made to do, but the kidneys and colon get rid of waste. The role of exercise in that process is unclear.

"In general exercise helps our lungs; kidneys get rid of things that can cause us onset of disease," she said.

A healthy lifestyle - eating healthy, drinking plenty of water and exercising - is important to detoxifying because it enables our body to do what is intended to do.

"As for specific yoga moves, I'm not so sure," she said.

Yoga instructor and fitness expert Shirley Archer, an author and spokeswoman for the American Council on Exercise (ACE) said the theory behind the effectiveness of detoxifying twists in yoga is that they squeeze the organs, which push the blood out so fresh blood can rush in.

"Better circulation equals better health," said Archer, who is based in Florida. "If detox means to eliminate from the body what it no longer needs, then certain yogic practices can help."

She said yogic deep breathing with strong exhalations can empty the lungs of unneeded carbon dioxide and allow for a fresh breath of more oxygenated air. "This nourishes all of our cells," she said. "It is also a method of cleansing because better circulation equals better health."

Meditative movement practices, such as yoga and tai chi, she added, can detox your attitude because they require staying in the present moment and discourage dwelling on the past.

Last summer, celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson began taking groups of 40-odd women on what she calls Detox Weeks, which involve at least three hours of workouts each day, as well as lectures on fitness and nutrition aimed mainly at encouraging lifestyle changes.

Similar weeks in other cities are planned for 2013.

"Women work out and think 'Why can't my love handles, muffin tops go away'?" said Anderson, creator of the Tracy Anderson Method and a co-owner, with actress Gwyneth Paltrow, of fitness centers in Los Angeles and New York. "The most important thing is if you can become a consistent exerciser."

"A good workout is not five to 10 yoga poses," she explained. "You have to learn to scale up your endurance. If you can only jump for five minutes straight, we'll go to 10 minutes, then 20 minutes."

Anderson said she uses the term detoxification broadly to include everything from working up a good sweat to clearing the mind of destructive thoughts.

"Detoxification is a big topic," she said.

Nancy Clark, a registered dietitian in Boston, Massachusetts and a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, said the body generally does a fine job of detoxifying itself through the liver and kidneys. Sweating has nothing to do with it.

"When you sweat you really don't detoxify anything," she explained. "If someone goes on a crash diet, then maybe toxins are released but then the body would take care of them. When you sweat you lose sodium."

A bomb blast near a school in a Damascus suburb killed more than a dozen people, at least half of them women and children, the state news agency reported. Russia, Syria's most important international ally, said for the first time that President Bashar Assad is increasingly losing control and the opposition may win the civil war. (AP Photo/SANA)

(AP) ? Russia's attempt to backpedal after a top diplomat said Syrian President Bashar Assad is losing control of his country reflects the dilemma Moscow faces as opposition fighters gain ground.

Throughout the Syrian crisis, Russia has tried to walk a fine line ? eschewing statements of outright support for Assad while blocking international attempts either to pressure him to stop the fighting or to leave power altogether.

Instead, Russia has insisted that negotiations are the only way to resolve the crisis and has portrayed itself as a principled opponent of foreign intervention.

The strategy, however, has led some to view Moscow's stance as a disingenuous attempt to prop up a dictator in a country where activists say more than 40,000 people have been killed since March 2011.

As the fighting in Syria intensified over recent months, Russian officials have held back from public assessments of whether Assad's regime would survive. But on Thursday, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov was quoted by major Russian news agencies as saying "there is a trend for the government to progressively lose control over an increasing part of the territory" and "an opposition victory can't be excluded."

On Friday, the Foreign Ministry issued a convoluted denial, saying its top envoy for Syria was merely characterizing the opinion of the Syrian opposition rather than stating Russia's view.

"In that context, Bogdanov again confirmed Russia's principled stance that a political settlement in Syria has no alternative," ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement.

While Bogdanov's statement seemed to signal Russia's attempt to begin positioning itself for Assad's eventual defeat, the Foreign Ministry's backtracking clearly indicated that Moscow has no intention yet of pulling away from its Mideast ally.

This was reinforced by Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil, who was in Moscow on Friday to meet with Bogdanov and his boss, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

"There have been no changes in Russia's position," Jamil told journalists after the meeting. "Russia stands for dialogue and against foreign interference."

Facing further questions Friday about Bogdanov's statement, Lukashevich insisted there had been no shift in the Russian position on Syria. He said Moscow is continuing to call for a political dialogue between the Syrian government and the opposition on the basis of the peace plan agreed upon at an international conference in June.

"Our only goal is to end the violence in Syria as quickly as possible, start a dialogue between the Syrians, between the government and the opposition, and work out a formula for advancing a political process," Lukashevich said. "There hasn't been and there won't be any retraction from our principled line on the Syrian affairs."

Georgy Mirsky, a leading Mideast expert with the Institute for World Economy and International Relations, a top foreign policy think tank supported by the Russian government, said Bogdanov may have slipped up.

"Bogdanov went very far, and the question is whether he coordinated his statement with Lavrov," the analyst said. "If he didn't, he may have gotten himself in trouble."

Mirsky said it would be difficult for Russian President Vladimir Putin to dump Assad.

"It would amount to a loss of face, look like caving in to Western pressure. That's not in his character," Mirsky said. "Russia is going to lose Syria anyway. But if it's lost as a result of Assad's ouster or killing or a coup by his own men, it wouldn't look like Putin's defeat. But he would look very bad indeed if even he doesn't wait for Bashar Assad to go away."

The U.S. quickly commended Russia on Thursday for "waking up to the reality" by acknowledging the Syrian regime's impending fall, but Lukashevich lashed back, saying that "we haven't fallen asleep."

"We haven't changed our position and we won't," he said.

Russia maintains a naval base at the Syrian port of Tartus, the only such outpost outside the ex-Soviet Union serving Russian navy ships in the Mediterranean and hosting an unspecified number of military personnel. Russia also has an unspecified number of military advisers teaching Syrians how to use Russian weapons, which make up the bulk of Syria's arsenals.

Syria is Russia's last remaining ally in the Middle East and has been a major customer of Soviet and Russian weapons industries for the last four decades, acquiring billions of dollars' worth of combat jets, helicopters, missiles, armored vehicles and other military gear.

Russia has joined with China at the U.N. Security Council to veto three resolutions that would have imposed sanctions on Assad's regime over its bloody crackdown on the uprising that began in March 2011. Moscow also has continued to provide the Syrian government with weapons despite strong international protests.

Asked if Beijing also foresees Assad's demise and whether it plans to evacuate its citizens in Syria, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said it would take unspecified steps to protect Chinese nationals and appealed anew for a cease-fire and for a negotiated political transition.

"China is deeply worried about the continuing violent conflict in Syria and always believes that a diplomatic settlement to the Syrian issue is the only way out and also serves the shared interest of the international community," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said at a daily media briefing.

On Friday, the Pentagon announced it will send two batteries of Patriot missiles and 400 troops to Turkey as part of a NATO force to protect Turkish territory from potential Syrian missile attacks.

Engineers roll up their sleeves -- and then do same with inductors

Dec. 13, 2012 ? On the road to smaller, high-performance electronics, University of Illinois researchers have smoothed one speed bump by shrinking a key, yet notoriously large element of integrated circuits.

Three-dimensional rolled-up inductors have a footprint more than 100 times smaller without sacrificing performance. The researchers published their new design paradigm in the journal Nano Letters.

"It's a new concept for old technology," said team leader Xiuling Li, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois.

Inductors, often seen as the sprawling metal spirals on computer chips, are essential components of integrated circuits. They store magnetic energy, acting as a buffer against changes in current and modulating frequency -- especially important in radio-frequency wireless devices. However, they take up a lot of space. Inductance depends on the number of coils in the spiral, so engineers cannot make them smaller without losing performance.

In addition, the larger the area the inductor occupies, the more it interfaces with the substrate the chip is built on, exacerbating a hindering effect called parasitic capacitance. Researchers have developed some three-dimensional inductor structures to solve the dual problems of space and parasitic capacitance, but these methods are complex and use techniques that are difficult to scale up to manufacturing levels.

The new inductor design uses techniques Li's group previously developed for making thin films of silicon nitrate, merely tens of nanometers in thickness, that roll themselves up into tubes. The research team used industry-standard two-dimensional processing to pattern metal lines on the film before rolling, creating a spiral inductor.

"We're making 3-D structures with 2-D processing," Li said. "Instead of spreading this out in a large area to increase inductance, we can have the same inductance but packed into a much smaller area."

Using the self-rolling technique, the researchers can shrink the area needed for a radio-frequency inductor to a scant 45 microns by 16 microns -- more than 100 times smaller than the area an equivalent flat spiral would require.

The design can be adjusted to fit target parameters including metal thickness and type, frequency, tube diameter and number of turns. According to Li, this technique could be used for capacitors and other integrated circuit elements as well.

Now, Li's group is working to produce high-performance inductor prototypes, in collaboration with electrical and engineering professor Jose Schutt-Aine. Preliminary experimental data show strong correlation with the modeled designs.

"Once we have optimized this process, we should be able to make an integrated circuit with a completely different platform that could be much smaller," Li said. "It's an ambitious goal."

The National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research supported this work. U. of I. visiting researcher Wen Huang, postdoctoral researcher Xin Yu, graduate student Paul Froeter and mechanical science and engineering professor Placid Ferreira were co-authors of this study. Li also is affiliated with the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, the Micro and Nanotechnology Lab, and the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Lab, all at the U. of I.

It?s another Expert Briefs, where I ask really smart business owners to answer your burning questions.

If you?ve missed past Expert Briefs, you can click on the undies to see them all ?>

So, on that note, this week I asked our panel of experts ?

It?s nearly the end of the year, so I?m personally looking
back over the last year. My question this week is

?Where does your money come from???

Here are their responses they so graciously shared.

Tiffany Dow of The Guide to Shiny Object Syndrome says:

I get my Internet income from a variety of sources. I?ve always loved having many different sources because of the panic I would feel (and uncertainty) if I relied on just one stream. So my income is divided up into 5 parts:

1. My own eCourses
2. PLR sales
3. Digital affiliate income
4. Affiliate marketing on Amazon
5. Ghostwriting

When it comes to the lion?s share, it would have to be my own ecourses ? because not only do I make money directly, but I worked to recruit an army of affiliates to promote for me. This provides approximately 40% of my online income. The best tip I can give you on this is to forget who else has already done what. Do it your way and you will have fans!

Next on the list is my PLR store. I?ve been building this for years and now have almost 500 products in my marketplace. It runs on autopilot and I have affiliates promoting it, earning 50% of the cart sales. Most PLR sellers create about 5-10 packs and quit, but volume is key to waking up and seeing $200 cart sales. PLR accounts for about 30% of my sales.

Digital affiliate income is what I consider my reviews to be. Here?s a tip on earning from digital reviews: whenever I buy any product, I implement and review it right away. It pays off because people trust me when they see my results unfold. The profits are twofold: once from the sales you make reviewing it as an affiliate, and again because you?re taking action and implementing! I make approximately 25% of my income from reviews.

The last two items on my list ? affiliate income on Amazon and ghostwriting are very small players in my income, but not because I?ve failed at them. Combined, they only add up to about 5% of my income. I rarely ever ghostwrite anymore (just primarily to keep my skills sharp) and I?ve sold off (flipped) most of my Amazon sites and Squidoo lenses, so I?m just now building them back up. Best advice? KEEP the money makers. Build a portfolio, instead of flipping for fast cash.

bobBob Jenkins of How to Use Mindmaps to Organize Your Business says:

Hey Nicole ? I love having a diversified set of revenue sources to balance out the ebbs and flows of having a business.

Here?s my breakdown from October 2011 ? October 2012:

  • 40% ? Personal Coaching Clients
  • 16% ? Mindmap My Business 3-Day Virtual Training
  • 15% ? Affiliate Income (Affiliate Marketing)
  • 13% ? Information Products
  • 12% ? Hotseat Holiday Workshops/Retreats
  • 1.4% ? Domain Sales
  • 1.4% ? Welcome To The Call
  • 1.2% ? Beef Jerky

A few things are interesting from this list for me (and from reviewing these kinds of numbers).

First, if I was like most coaches, I would be missing out on a ton of revenue without the additional revenue sources like information products and information products.

The 3 private label sources (Domains ? GoDadady, WelcomeToTheCall ? Instant Teleseminar, and Beef Jerky ? Jerky Direct) that make up a combined 4% are both neglected and rarely advertised. I consider spending more energy on them, but then I remember how much more fun I have coaching and teaching virtual workshops.

Some of these sources are also inter-related, in that they provide the same customers multiple levels of access and intensity. If I sold in a bunch of different niches, it would be harder for me to improve my revenue/customer numbers.

For example, the Hotseat Holidays both lead to and stem from personal coaching clients.

As for affiliate income, my top generating recommendations over the past year have been for Lon Naylor (Learn Camtasia), Clay Collins (TheMarketingProgram), Digital Access Pass membership software, and Aweber autoresponders.

connieConnie Ragen Green of Affiliate Marketing Case Studies says:

The end of the year always means that I will be reviewing and thinking about my online business to see what worked, what I loved doing, and what I need to completely revamp and update in my business.

2012 has been a year of great growth for me. I am now speaking internationally, which was a goal I set for myself at this time last year. This is my sixth full year online, so I am now more comfortable in every area of my business. You may have heard about the ?10,000 Hours Rule?, a concept based on a study by Anders Ericsson and discussed throughout the book ?Outliers: The Story of Success? by Malcolm Gladwell. The premise is that one needs to accrue ten thousand hours of experience in an area before being able to move to the next level of competence and understanding. I am now at the point in my business where major changes are more likely to occur.

  • 50% ? Affiliate marketing continues to account for about fifty percent of my income. I enjoy the responsibility that comes along with only recommending the people and products I love, in the exact areas that are relevant to building a successful online business.
  • 25% ? My own products and courses account for another twenty-five percent of my income, and I now stay tightly focused on what I create and sell under my brand.
  • 25% ? The rest of my income is derived from my high level Mentor programs, my Weekend Retreats, and from speaking at live events around the world.

My recommendation is to write down everything you are doing to generate income in your business to see which things are working best for you. The ultimate goal is to have a profitable business that allows you to engage in activities that you enjoy while serving the needs of your target audience.

KellyKelly McCausey of Solo Smarts Podcast says:

Where does my money come from? Had an interesting situation come up this week on Facebook. Lynn Terry and I have a big 1200+ member group working through a 90 Day Low Carb Challenge and someone got it in their head that we are some sort of Ninja Marketing Geniuses who make money every time someone clicks a link or likes anything. Lynn said ?If only that were so!? LOL!

Affiliate marketing does represent a nice chunk of my income and it is one of my favorite sources since it tends to be the income that keeps on coming long after I did whatever I did to initiate it. It comes naturally as I recommend the tools, people and resources I have found most useful in my own online business.

Information product sales is another valued source of income for me. I have six different courses/workshops for sale right now plus a membership program. Sales come through my own list and via my amazing affiliates.

As we discussed not long ago, a surprising source of income for me is the check I get from an advertising network for displaying their ads on my small mom and family focused blog network. Sponsored posts, paid promotions and the like are all nice extras for my budget from month to month.

Occasionally I go back to my roots and generate cash with my graphic and web design skills. In fact, I put the word out last night that I?m accepting a couple of new clients. (I?m raising cash for something important!) I don?t want to service clients on a regular basis, having a skill others are willing to pay to tap is a powerful thing.

I?ve dabbled with a few other things this year but unfortunately most of that didn?t turn out to be the turn on I?d expected and I?ve let those projects go dormant. I think it?s important for everything to know that every project and idea is not going to be profitable. I learn from these disappointments and use those lessons to be smarter about everything else I do.

Finally, I earn money by coaching clients one on one. What might interest everyone is the fact that this is not my primary income. Several people have told me that that is what they assume ? that I?m getting RICH by coaching others. I?m not THAT coach who only makes money from coaching. I actually make money from real life projects that have nothing to do with telling someone else what to do as you can see here.

Flexibility, variety, having these choices is a dream come true for this solopreneur. I wish you all the same!

jeanetteJeanette S. Cates, PhD of Plan Your Online Business says:

What a great question! I generally know my numbers, but I was curious about how they have changed over the years. In fact, I pulled a spreadsheet for 2000 ? 2012 and here?s what I found:

  • In 2000, my revenue was half consulting and half products (which includes teaching classes). That was fairly early in my Internet Marketing career, so that makes sense.
  • By 2005, revenue was 25% affiliate programs, 15% adsense (the heyday!), 20% consulting, and the rest in product sales.
  • By 2010,revenue was at 20% affiliate programs, only 8% consulting (who had time?), 20% member sites (the hot thing that year!), and the rest in product sales, including partner products.
  • This year, it?s steady at 30% affiliate sales, 22% consulting, 22% member sites, and the rest in product sales.

It?s so important to have a mix of revenue sources. As some things come and go, other items remain steady. You may have years when you create a bunch of products and others when you want to work more closely with your clients in smaller sites and consulting. Remember ? it?s YOUR business and you get to choose how you make your living!

Dr. Mani of How to Set Goals says:

Interesting question, Nicole.

Here are my answers, as they apply to online infopreneur income alone:

  • Affiliate marketing ? 25%
  • Freelance writing ? 20%
  • Adsense ? 5%
  • Infoproduct Sales ? 30%
  • Books on Amazon ? 5%
  • Membership sites ? 10%
  • Other ? 5%

It helps that I periodically review this set of numbers, and see how well they match my overall goals for the year. That way, I?m able to tweak and focus on what matters for the month or quarter.

NicoleNicole Dean of .. here! .. says:

Well this has been interesting to me to read the responses.? :)

My income is similar to my friends above.

  1. My Own Product Sales
  2. My PLR Sites
  3. Affiliate Marketing
  4. Personal Coaching
  5. Google Adsense (Niche Sites)
  6. Web Hosting
  7. Amazon Kindle
  8. Consulting

I?ll get into a bit more detail on each.

1. My Own Product Sales.

I have several training products that I sell to intermediate and advanced level online business owners.

My most recent one that I?m super proud of is BlogCPR.com ? how to keep your blog fresh.

I also have some courses at the beginner level, including the ones at MomsTalkBiz.com

2. My PLR Sites

I have three PLR sites.? Each is slightly different in focus.

EasyPLR.com
I opened EasyPLR in 2006. At that site, I mainly sell packs of articles, reports, and ecourses. There is no membership component involved. The goal with the site is to get people to make an impulse buy as it?s a low priced item and then find out they love me and my stuff and trust me. Then they become repeat customers.

YummyPLR.com
Yummy PLR was opened after EasyPLR (I believe in 2007). We sell food PLR there, including PLR recipes. This site is a membership model and many of our members stay for years.

CoachingPLRContent.com
I opened Coaching PLR content with Melissa Ingold in 2010. At that site, we want to arm our customers with resources, tools and presentations they can use to expand their expert status even further. We have worksheets and PowerPoints slides and scripts and all kinds of stuff with PLR rights. A lot of our customers use our presentations to create video training and to do live webinars, as well.

3. Affiliate Marketing

I don?t have exact numbers in front of me, but I would say that I earn approximately 50% of my income through affiliate marketing.

This varies from promoting things like Hillbilly Housewife ebooks on a niche site ? to promoting exercise videos from Amazon on another niche site, to promoting services like Aweber here, on my blog and to my lists.

4. Personal Coaching

I take on a handful of personal coaching clients at a time. I spend a lot of time one-on-one with them which is why I only work with a few. I find it extremely rewarding and I love it.

I focus on Infoproduct marketers who have at least one product, who already know who their customers are, and they have their product up for sale (or nearly there). Once they get to that point, I have a blast helping them to multiply their income.

5. Google Adsense on Niche Sites

I still have some niche sites with Adsense on them. For four years, Google paid my mortgage. But, now? Not as much. It?s just a nice little deposit every month. The good thing is that I don?t have to do anything to earn it.

6. Web Hosting.

I am a partner in a web hosting company ? MomWebs.com (with Kelly McCausey).

We focus on helping newbies who are skeeeered of technology to get their WordPress sites up and running. (Many of them switch from Blogger to WordPress with our help.) So that project brings in some monthly cashola, as well.

7. Amazon Kindle

My Kindle earnings are small, but they will be growing next year. :)

You can see a few of my Kindle books here:

8. Consulting

On occasion, I will do hourly consulting for online or offline businesses. I don?t do this too often, simply because I don?t like to have a schedule where I have to be somewhere (even on the phone) at a certain time ? yeah I?m weird like that. But am always open to having someone buy an hour of access to my brain.

Well that?s an overview. I hope it was interesting to you.

Talk to me.

Is this what you expected to hear?

Is it similar to your income streams? Or different?

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Warmly,
Nicole Dean

PS. If you like this post ? share it and check out my friends? sites. That?ll make me happy! :) Appreciate you!

Stagecoach rejects Twin America allegations

LONDON (Reuters) - Stagecoach on Wednesday rejected allegations that its U.S. bus joint venture Twin America was anti-competitive after the United States government started legal proceedings against the business.

The British transport group said the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) and New York's Attorney General had initiated legal proceedings against Twin America, a joint venture between Stagecoach North America and City Sights, set up in 2009.

Stagecoach said the U.S. bodies were seeking dissolution of the joint venture or they could force the company to sell certain assets. However, Stagecoach said it would "robustly" defend its position.

"Since the joint venture was formed in 2009, the sightseeing bus industry has become even more competitive as new sightseeing bus operators have commenced business in New York and other companies have announced firm plans to do so shortly," said Stagecoach.

"Stagecoach North America, City Sights and Twin America disagree with the position of the DoJ and the New York attorney general and believe their action is unnecessary."

Air Force sends mystery mini-shuttle back to space

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) ? The military's small, top-secret version of the space shuttle rocketed into orbit Tuesday for a repeat mystery mission, two years after making the first flight of its kind.

The Air Force launched the unmanned spacecraft Tuesday hidden on top of an Atlas V rocket.

It's the second flight for this original X-37B spaceplane. It circled the planet for seven months in 2010. A second X-37B spacecraft spent more than a year in orbit.

These high-tech mystery machines ? 29 feet long ? are about one-quarter the size of NASA's old space shuttles and can land automatically on a runway. The two previous touchdowns occurred in Southern California; this one might end on NASA's three-mile-long runway once reserved for the space agency's shuttles.

The military isn't saying much if anything about this new secret mission. In fact, launch commentary ended 17 minutes into the flight.

But one scientific observer, Harvard University's Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, speculates the spaceplane is carrying sensors designed for spying and likely is serving as a testbed for future satellites.

While acknowledging he does not know what the spaceplane is carrying, McDowell said on-board sensors could be capable of imaging or intercepting transmissions of electronic emissions from terrorist training sites in Afghanistan or other hot spots.

The beauty of a reusable spaceplane is that it can be launched on short notice based on need, McDowell said.

What's important about this flight is that it is the first reflight.

"That is pretty cool," McDowell said, "reusing your spacecraft after a runway landing. That's something that has only really been done with the shuttle."

The two previous secret flights were in 200-plus-mile-high orbits, circling at roughly 40-degree angles to the equator. That means the craft flew over the swatch between 40 degrees or so north latitude and 40 degrees or so south latitude.

That puts Russia's far north out of the spaceplane's observing realm, McDowell noted. "It might be studying Middle Eastern latitudes or it might just be being used for sensor tests over the United States," he said.

McDowell speculates that this newest flight will follow suit.
